The Company of Ten’s much anticipated comedy, Alan Ayckbourn’s Round and Round the Garden, is running at The Abbey Theatre, St Albans until 24th May.
Like many good comedies, Round and Round The Garden includes plenty of unlikely situations and physical humour. But according to director Alan Bobroff, it is the quality of comic writing that really makes the play stand out. “Rather than relying on the knockabout of farce to produce laughs, Ayckbourn creates the comedy in the personalities of his characters and the dialogue he has written for them,” Alan says. “During rehearsals we are constantly finding little nuggets of comedy hidden in the writing.” He adds: “To have the opportunity to direct a play by one of our favourite playwrights, and one who especially appeals to audiences at this theatre, is a particular delight.”
Our reviewer, Malcolm Singer says “Ayckbourn succeeds, by showing us ourselves with all our desires, hopes and failings” If you’d like to read Malcolm’s full review, please click on Theatre Reviews at the top of this page.
