Just the mention of the fact that Matthew Bourne is coming to the MK Theatre is almost enough to sell out for the week! The latest from this master choregrapher is Sleeping Beauty. As expected Matthew brings enough new ideas to the piece to keep the regular ballet lovers on the edge of their seats whilst at the same time keeping the standard so high as to please even the toughest diehard of the “Old School”.
There are some new characters that officianados of Grimm’s Fairy Tales might not recognise. Princess Aurora’s romantic interest is not a prince, but the royal gamekeeper, Leo and the sinister but charming son of the Dark Fairy Carabosse, Caradoc. Matthew Bourne’s haunting new scenario is a gothis tale for all ages where the traditional good vs evil and rebirth is turned upside down, creating a supernatural love story that even the passage of time cannot hinder.
With Tchaikovsky’s wonderful music, some popular regular New Adventures performers such as Ben Bunce, Tom Jackson Greaves and Adam Maskell who between them share the twin roles of Carabosse and Caradoc and much loved leading ladies Kerry Biggin and Daisy May Kemp playing the role of Queen Eleanor. Count Lilac ( King of the Fairies) is played by accomplished New Adventures’ performer Christopher Marney and, in his debut role for New Adventures, the original Olivier Award winning star of Billy Elliot, Liam Mower
